Portugal is the World's Best Golf Destination

Portugal wins World's Best Golf Destination 2014 in the World Golf Awards, a sister event of the prestigious World Travel Awards, currently celebrating its 21st anniversary as the Oscars of the Travel Industry. Unsurprisingly, Portugal has also been voted Europe's Best Golf Destination 2014.

Portugal again has won at the World Golf Awards 2015 with the accolade of the Best Golf Destination 2015 in a ceremony held at the Conrad Algarve on Saturday.

Portugal is the perfect destination for all seasons. Among other reasons because it is located only a short flight away from most European capital cities, it benefits from 3000 hours of sun per year and it features almost 1000 km of the most idyllic beaches of the Atlantic Ocean. The numerous leisure activities, beautiful landscapes at a short distance, gastronomy, great wines and the warmth of the Portuguese people make it one of the most sought-after destinations.

The Best Portuguese Golf Course was not in the Algarve as The Royal Obidos won the category but the Pine Cliffs Resort won the award for the Best Hotel in Portuguese Golf 2015.

LISBON GOLF

Golf Courses on the Lisbon Coast

Portugal is famous for its golf courses, and there are twelve highly rated examples in the Lisbon area. Many of the best ones are between Estoril and Sintra, and many of the better local hotels (likeLawrence's Hotel, Sintra) can organize golfing packages on request.

Larger hotels and the golf courses themselves can supply golf passes, at around €200 for five rounds. This works out cheaper than paying for individual rounds, which start at around €50, though if you play during the week or late afternoon prices are often reduced.

Late October or early November welcomes golfers to Estoril's major courses for its International Golf Week. Perhaps the most famous course is at the upmarket Penha Longa Golf Club in a former monastic estate, designed by Robert Trent Jones and that has hosted the Portuguese Open.

The Estoril Golf Club, right on the A5 motorway from Lisbon to Cascais, has 27 holes designed by McKenzie Ross. This also hosts the Portuguese Open and international competitions.

Quinta da Marinha, just outside Cascais on the Guincho road, was also designed by Robert Trent Jones and is part of a holiday complex, featuring a driving range, six tennis courts and a hotel.

Another option is Campo de Golfe de Belas, near Queluz-Belas train station, a Championship-standard golf course designed by William Rocky Roquemore.

Most of these golf courses, together with Lisbon's beaches, can be seen on this map
